EPLURIBUS UNUM / IMMIGRATION UNIT

What factors encourage immigrants to leave their homeland and journey to the "melting pot " of the United States?
How have immigrant contributions shaped society in the United States?

Today you will embark upon a journey, a search to find a home. Each group will do research on a group of pilgrims—immigrants to America. Why would someone leave a familiar area of family and friends for the opportunities offered in the United States?

Each group of students will be assigned a country. Classroom materials, Media center resources , computer references as well as interviews will provide access to the answers you seek.

All group members will takes notes on :

  • Describe life in the country of origin(1890’s to present)
  • Conditions / reasons to leave
  • Trace the journey to the U.S.
  • Immigration Process- Ellis Island and Beyond
  • Assimilation into the U. S.
  • Current Restrictions / Present Immigration Laws

 

Within each group ONE ADDITIONAL topic will be assigned to each group member, they are as follows:

  • Create a current map of homeland (in your hand )
  • Create the nation’s flag ( history of symbolism)
  • Identify significant Pilgrims /Famous immigrants
  • Describe contributions of this group to the U. S.
  • Describe food / music
  • Provide examples of Fashion/Style/Sports

All members will create and participate in a live group presentation to introduce a family from the country you have studied. Consult the unit’s calendar as well as the Keller website for assignments, requirements and due dates. Each student must include a minimum of five (5) varied sources and submit a Works Cited by a date to be determined.
