As we continue our study of ancient Greece, students will be working in small groups to produce an ancient Greek newspaper using various types of media. Each of five groups will create an "authentic" newspaper section of one-two pages from an ancient Greek newspaper. Students will become editors and writers of this newspaper, gathering information for their pages from our textbook, encyclopedias, websites and other materials in the Media Center. The final 5-section newspaper will be printed in color, bound and displayed on the Gr. 6 hallway bulletin board.

Each group will choose appropriate events from ancient Greece on which to report, making sure that each topic is HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. Articles will be written using MS Publisher, and every page must have headlines, bylines (writers’ names) and captions under all pictures. Groups will present their polished pages to the rest of the class using the SMART board, so it is crucial that all work is saved on the computer under Student Work for access by all group members in case of absences. Any printed materials or notes must remain in the group’s labeled classroom folder. The group’s WORKS CITED PAGE must include a minimum of three resources, with at least one website and one book.

The choices of newspaper sections are listed below. After we analyze current-day newspapers, each student will be asked to write down his/her top two page choices and will then be grouped accordingly. Grading/criteria sheets will be given to each group member once sections have been assigned.

Good luck and enjoy writing about ancient Greece!

FRONT PAGE

This group chooses the name of the newspaper and the year it is published, the main headline and a minimum of two news events of that time. An interview with a witness or concerned party to the lead story must be included, as well as pictures of the events reported.

EDITORIAL PAGE

This group chooses a controversial topic and writes two different points of view (pro and con) on that story. One point of view is the Editorial (editor’s viewpoint) and the other will be a Letter to the Editor from a Greek citizen with a differing opinion. Additional letters to the editor, and a political cartoon or picture must also be included (can be hand drawn and scanned, or imported from another source.)

ENTERTAINMENT SECTION

This section must contain an announcement, with detailed information, of an upcoming event (religious festival, play, celebration with dancers, acrobats, musicians, etc.) as well as an entertainment review of a comedy, tragedy, a religious festival or symposia (dinner parties with entertainment.) Pictures of actors, musicians, special celebrations, etc. must also be included.

SPORTS SECTION

This group must describe, in detail, at least two different sporting events, including names of athletes, scores and statistics. Choices could be the Olympic Games, local sporting events or a review of a new gymnasium. This section must also include an interview with an athlete from ancient Greece, as well as pictures with captions.

"MISCELLANEOUS" PAGE

There are several different types of articles from which to choose for this section. Since articles on these pages are usually brief, this group must produce at least four articles from the following categories: help wanted ads, weather report, "Dear Athena" advice column, "Gossip Around Greece", "Ask the Oracle" column, a comic strip/cartoon, a death notice or a lost and found ad. This section must also include several pictures with captions.

REMEMBER, ALL PAGES MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Name of Newspaper and same date across the tops of all pages
  • Name of Your Section centered at top of the page
  • Article Titles that are bolder and in larger print than the text of the articles
  • Bylines (the names of the people who wrote the article, in smaller print than the article titles)
  • Pictures with captions relating to the articles
  • Neatly formatted, colorful and visually appealing page layout
  • Correct spelling, punctuation and capitalization
  • Historically accurate information
