Student Work

As an enrichment activity to our unit on Ancient Egypt, you will complete a multi-step, multi-media research project on one of several topic choices. You may work alone or with a partner who chooses the same research topic. The final products of this research will be presented in the classroom and displayed at our annual "Ancient Egypt Day" in the cafeteria. The basic steps of this assignment are listed below:

  1. Choose a research topic from the list provided that interests you most. If there is another topic you’re interested in, please see me for approval.

  2. Research will be conducted in the media center, the classroom and at home (if needed.) The results of your research must be in the form of PowerPoint slides or a written report that follow the criteria provided.

  3. Each student or student partners must create a labeled "visual" (no larger than a desktop in size) that relates to their topic.

  4. Your final PowerPoint slide or last paragraph of your report must answer the following "Big Question." Be sure to use the "ACE" strategy when answering it.

(A = Answer the question, C= Cite the text, E= Explain your answer)

QUESTION: If you could speak with anyone from Ancient Egypt, who would it be and why?

PROCEDURE/REQUIREMENTS:

    1. This project may be completed alone or with a partner, but the requirements for this project will be greater and the expectations higher if you work with a friend. Each student, whether working alone or with another student, will receive an individual grade for his/her contributions to the project.

    2. Choose one of topics on the attached sheet, where you will also find ideas for visuals. If there is a topic of interest to you that is not listed, please see me so that we might discuss it. NO MORE THAN THREE STUDENTS OR GROUPS IN THE CLASS MAY CHOOSE THE SAME TOPIC.

    3. As you research, you will be responsible for maintaining a labeled, in-class Egypt Folder to hold all notes taken on your topic. You are also responsible for saving your computer research with your name and period under Student Work on the HKMS Network. In addition, you must keep track of all resources you use in order to create a Works Cited Page (minimum of three sources.)

    4. The final product of this project will be a polished report or PowerPoint on your chosen topic (minimum of two typed pages or six PowerPoint slides if you work alone, three pages or eight slides if working with a partner). Students must also produce a visual that relates to the chosen topic. Both the report and PowerPoint must contain at least two graphics (scanned or inserted as jpegs.) The Works Cited Page must be attached to the back of your report or be one of the final slides in your PowerPoint. If you choose to do a PowerPoint, you must make a hard copy of all slides for me to grade.

    5. All students will present their research and visuals in front of the class, and then to parents, family and friends who will be invited to see your projects at our "Egypt Day" exhibit.
    6. This project is double-weighted and will be graded according to the criteria listed on the attached grading sheet. USE THE CHECKLIST TO MAKE SURE YOU’VE COMPLETED EVERY REQUIREMENT OF THIS PROJECT!

IDEAS FOR VISUALS

You can use the samples shown in class as a guide, or consider making a model pyramid, funerary mask, doll "mummy", sarcophagus, drawing/model of the Nile, "portraits" of pharaohs, diorama depicting daily life, replicas of items from ancient Egypt, ankh, crook and flail, map of an archaeological dig, etc.

REMEMBER: YOUR VISUAL MUST BE NO LARGER THAN YOUR DESK TOP!
