As a culminating activity for our study of ancient Greece, students will produce an ancient Greek newspaper using various types of media. Working in small groups, students will produce one of five different "authentic" pages from an ancient Greek Newspaper. Each page can be either one- or two-sided, as determined by each group. Students will be the editors and writers of the newspaper, and will gather information for this project from the textbook, encyclopedias, websites and other materials in the Media Center. A correctly formatted Works Cited Page with a minimum of three entries (both books and websites) must also be submitted by each group.

Each group of students will decide which events to cover and will be responsible for making sure that they are HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. All pages must have headlines, bylines and captions under any pictures. The final newspaper pages from each group will be combined to produce an actual newspaper using MS Publisher. Groups will present their polished articles to the rest of the class using PowerPoint format. It is crucial that all work is saved under "Student Work", so that in case of absences, other members of the group can access any saved work. All printed materials for each group must be kept in a labeled folder that must remain in the classroom.

The page choices for the Greek Newspaper are listed below. Students be asked to submit their top two page choices and will be grouped accordingly. Grading/criteria sheets will be given to each student once pages have been assigned.

Good luck and enjoy writing about ancient Greece!

FRONT PAGE

In this section, the group will determine the name of the newspaper and the year it is published, the main headline and a minimum of two news events of that time period. An interview with a witness or concerned party must be included, as well as pictures of the events covered.

EDITORIAL PAGE

This group will consult with those responsible for the Front Page to write two articles showing different points of view (pro and con) about one of the Front Page news stories. One article will be an Editorial (editor’s viewpoint) and the other will be a Letter to the Editor from a Greek citizen with a differing point of view. In addition, a political cartoon or picture must be included (can be hand drawn or scanned from another source.) Additional "letters to the editor" giving personal opinions on pertinent topics can also be included on this page.

ENTERTAINMENT SECTION

This section must contain at least one announcement, with detailed information, of an upcoming event (religious festival, play, celebration, etc.), as well as an entertainment review of a comedy or tragedy, religious festival or symposia (dinner parties with entertainment.) Pictures of actors, musicians, etc. with appropriate captions must be included on this page. Schedules of performances and ticket information can also be included in this section.

SPORTS SECTION

This group must describe, in detail, a minimum of two different sporting events. Choices could be the Olympic Games, local competitions or a review of a new gymnasium. An interview with an athlete from ancient Greece, and pictures with captions must also be included in this section. Scores of sporting events between city-states can also be added to this page.

"MISCELLANEOUS" PAGE

There are several "odds ‘n ends" types of articles from which to choose for this section. Since this page includes less writing and is more visual in nature, the group assigned to this section must produce at least four items from the following categories: classified ads (items for sale, jobs available), weather report, "Dear Athena" advice column, "Gossip Around Greece", "Ask the Oracle" column, a comic strip/cartoon, an obituary or a eulogy. This section must include at least two pictures with captions.

REMEMBER, ALL PAGES MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Name of Newspaper and same date across the tops of all pages
  • Name of Section centered at top of the page
  • Article Titles that are bolder and in larger print than the articles
  • Bylines (the names of the people who wrote the article, in smaller print than the article title)
  • Pictures with captions relating to the event covered
  • Neatly formatted, visually appealing page layout – use color!
  • Correct spelling, punctuation and capitalization!
