Project Expectations and Interdisciplinary Connections
Mass, Density and Volume
6th Grade Science

Students will:

  • Work individually using notebook computers to calculate the density of various objects
  • Find the mass of the object using the ExploreScience website
  • Find the volume of the object using the ExploreScience website
  • Use the formula Density = Mass/Volume to calculate the density of the object
  • Record the information on the worksheet
  • Predict whether the object will float or sink
  • Verify their results by placing the object in the pail of liquid

Curriculum Goals

Technology Integration

Math:

1.   Students will estimate, make and use measurements to describe and compare phenomena, and explore the structure and use of systems of measurement, including converting units within systems.

2.   Students will select and use appropriate measurement units and tools to make measurements to the degree of accuracy required by the situation.

3.   Students will solve problems involving the concept of, calculation of, and relationships among length, perimeter, area, volume, angle measure, capacity, weight, mass and temperature.

4.   Students and use formulas and procedures for solving measurement problems.

 Science:

1.   Students will demonstrate knowledge of the scientific method through answering open- ended questions and laboratory experiences.

2.   Students will conduct scientific investigations, which involves observations and data collection, devising and testing hypotheses, and drawing conclusions to evaluate hypotheses.

3.   Students will identify and manipulate variables in an experiment.

1.   Use notebook computers to access the Internet

2.   Use ExploreScience.com to complete the Density Lab

3.   Use calculators on the notebooks to calculate the density
