HOLOCAUST HEROES:
DIRECTED ON-LINE STUDY

May-June 2005

 

Project Title:
Holocaust Heroes

Project Purpose:

Students will gain an insight into the importance of resistance fighters or rescuers, otherwise known as Righteous Gentiles, during the period of the Holocaust.

(Note: Because this project is under the program, Directed On-Line Study, the impetus is on technology. However, there are aspects of each of the curriculum standards listed that are part of the project but not the main thrust.)

CORE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will:

  1. work independently to research their randomly-selected resistance fighter or rescuer, otherwise known as a Righteous Gentile.
  2. use pre-selected websites and secondary sources located in the Media Center.
  3. create a graphic organizer using the information found through research.
  4. create a newspaper or brochure including feature articles, headlines, advertisements, comic strips, obituaries, and images.
  5. use the correct "Works Cited" format when citing resources.
  6. share their findings with the class through oral presentations.
Curriculum Goals Technology Integration
Social Studies:

1. Choose a topic and gather information from the school Media Center.

2. Retrieve information, search and use research skills.

3. Introduce and review information from various sources to complete work.

4. Present projects using technology.

Historical Thinking: 

1. Students will develop historical thinking skills, contextualizing, comprehending and analyzing historical sources.

2. Students will apply their understanding of historical issues.


Language Arts:
Students will:

1. use prior knowledge and experiences. 

2. create graphic organizer to organize ideas. 

3. interpret text by using prior knowledge and experiences. 

4. use a variety of monitoring and self-correcting methods (skimming, scanning, reading ahead, re-reading, using resources, summarizing, re-telling, re-adjusting speed). 

5. gather, select, organize and analyze information from primary and secondary sources. 

6. engage in a process of generating ideas, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing or presenting. 

7. proofread and edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. 

8. speak and write using conventional patterns of syntax and diction. 

9. create a Works Cited based on the 6-8 Writing Tools.

Students will:

1. use Internet (if resources in books were not sufficient) to view pre-selected websites. 

2. critically evaluate the websites for relevancy to specific topic. 

3. use Inspiration to organize their research.

4. enhance their web by changing style, design, color and adding appropriate graphics. 

5. use the "Spell Check" tool. 

6. save graphic organizer (web) in the designated folder on the Network. 

7. use graphic organizer as the basis for creating the brochure or newspaper. 

8. enhance newspaper or brochure using different fonts, styles, colors and graphics. 

9. choose appropriate graphic from the Internet to enhance the product.

10. save the graphic (Save AS) in the proper format on the Network.

11. insert graphics into Publisher. 

12. resize graphics and text to fit into brochure.

13. save file in designated folder on Network. 

14. select the color printer for printing one page two-sided brochure.
