Project Title: Multimedia Greek Newspaper

Project Purpose:
Students will create a newspaper that will enrich and enhance their knowledge of ancient Greece.

CORE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will:

  1. Analyze a specific section, in small groups, of current newspapers to determine the layout, content and tone
  2. Determine criteria, in small groups, for producing corresponding pages of their specific section in a Greek newspaper
  3. Share criteria with full class
  4. List topics for articles that could have appeared in their section of an ancient Greek newspaper
  5. Share list of article topics
  6. Choose top 2 sections to produce
  7. Work in groups based on their choices
  8. Conduct research using a variety of media including teacher-selected websites, on-line databases, books, encyclopedias, and periodicals
  9. Take notes on their topic to be stored both in the classroom and in Student Work on the server
  10. Use appropriate graphics that match their topics (either from the Internet or hand or computer-generated)
  11. Use Microsoft Publisher to write and layout articles
  12. Insert graphics into the page
  13. Present their individual pages to the class
Curriculum Goals Technology Integration
Social Studies:

1. Choose a topic and gather information from the school Media Center.

2. Retrieve information, search and use research skills.

3. Introduce and review information from various sources to complete work.

4. Present projects using technology.

Historical Thinking: 

1. Students will develop historical thinking skills, contextualizing, comprehending and analyzing historical sources.

2. Students will apply their understanding of historical issues.

Language Arts and Reading:

1. Take notes using a bulleted notetaking format

2. Use a variety of monitoring and self-correcting methods (skimming, scanning, reading ahead, re-reading, using resources, summarizing, re-telling, re-adjusting speed)

3. Interpret and evaluate written, oral and visual texts, using prior knowledge and experiences

4. Gather, select, organize and analyze information from primary and secondary sources

5. Engage in a process of generating ideas, and drafting, revising, editing, and publishing or presenting

6. Proofread and edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization

7. Speak and write using conventional patterns of syntax and diction

1. Use Internet to view pre-selected websites on famous people and events

2. Critically evaluate the websites for relevancy

3. Identify and save graphics as .jpeg files in Student Work folder labeled by grade and period.

4. Name the graphic file as one that will identify what it is

5. Use Microsoft Publisher to create Ancient Greek newspaper page.

  • Insert textboxes in order to type
  • Select appropriate font style, color and size
  • Align text
  • Use Spell-check tool
  • Download images as .jpeg files
  • Insert graphics as .jpeg files
  • Re-size and re-format graphics to fit the layout of the page
  • Insert textboxes to add captions to the graphics
  • Presentations in PowerPoint must include 2 of the following:
  • sound clips
  • animation
  • transitions
  • backgrounds
  • different fonts
  • Save page in the specific folder under Student Work
  • Locate, copy and paste URL of websites into Citation Machine
  • Create Works Cited using Citation Machine
  • Print newspaper page by selecting the correct printer and paper size
