Definition of Project

 

Project Title:  Famous Historical People

Project Purpose: Students will identify how their selected individual influenced modern times and how life would be different had this person not lived.

CORE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will:

explore the pre-selected websites to gather information relevant to their historical person

explore secondary sources (books from the Media Center) to gather information

submit an outline before turning in a rough draft

create a realistic costume depicting their famous historical person

present a speech about an important historical person from different time periods

Social Studies:

Historical Thinking:

  • Examine data to determine the adequacy and sufficiency of evidence, point of view, historical context, bias, distortion and propaganda and distinguish fact from opinion.
  • Analyze data in order to see persons and events in their historical context, understand causal factors and appreciate change over time.

Local United States and World History:

  • Locate the events, peoples and places they have studied in time and place.

Historical Themes:

  • Explain how roles and status of people have differed and changed throughout history based on gender, age, class, racial and ethnic identity, wealth and their social position.

  • Explain the significance of the achievements of selected individual scientists and inventors from around the world and from various periods.

Language Arts:

1. Interpret text by using prior knowledge and experiences

2. Use a variety of monitoring and self-correcting methods (skimming, scanning, reading ahead, re-reading, using resources, summarizing, re-telling, re-adjusting speed)

3. Gather, select, organize and analyze information from primary and secondary sources

4. Engage in a process of generating ideas, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing or presenting

5. Proofread and edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization

6. Speak and write using conventional patterns of syntax and diction

1. Use Internet to view pre-selected websites on famous historical people

2. Critically evaluate the websites for relevancy to specific theme

3. Use the interactive Online Outline form located on the HKMS website

4. Use Noodletools.com, an online citation tool, to create Works Cited

5. Use Word to write an essay on their famous historical person

6. Use Word to review and revise essays
