DEFINITION

Project Title: Black History – Women’s History Research Project

Project Purpose: Students will research famous personalities or events to determine their impact on society, using technology to enhance and synthesize their findings.

CORE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will:

1. Explore pre-selected websites to gather information relevant to their topic
2. Explore secondary sources (books from the Media Center) to gather information
3. Research their famous person or event
4. Take notes on their famous person or event
5. Use a graphic organizer to organize their notes
6. Determine historical event or persona’s impact on society
7. Create a multimedia presentation
8. Present the final product to their teacher and peers

Curriculum Goals Technology Integration
Social Studies:

1. Choose a topic and gather information from the school Media Center.

2. Retrieve information, search and use research skills.

3. Present projects using technology.

4. Introduce and review information from various sources to complete work.

5. Use strategic organizers to develop a plan.

6. Differentiate historical fact from fiction.

Language Arts and Reading:

1. Create graphic organizer to organize ideas

2. Use a variety of monitoring and self-correcting methods (skimming, scanning, reading ahead, re-reading, using resources, summarizing, re-telling, re-adjusting speed)

3. Interpret and evaluate written, oral and visual texts, using prior knowledge and experiences

4. Gather, select, organize and analyze information from primary and secondary sources

5. Engage in a process of generating ideas, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing or presenting

6. Proofread and edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization

7. Speak and write using conventional patterns of syntax and diction

Health/Guidance:

1. Consider your audience in creating the final product

2. Use effective communication skills to appropriately present their multimedia product

1. Use Inspiration, as a graphic organizer, to create a tool for gathering information

2. Share webs with class using the projector and notebooks

3. Use Internet to view websites on famous people and events

4. Critically evaluate the websites for relevancy

5. Identify and insert photographs using the Internet to enhance the presentation

6. Re-size and re-format photos for the presentation

7. Use Powerpoint to create a presentation for the HKMS webpage

a. Create slides that include animation, text boxes, and transitions

b. Present Powerpoint using the big screen projector

c. Use technical elements of the program to meet the needs of their audience
