Project Definition

Project Title:            

American Masterpieces, Getting to Know  a Painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Project Purpose:  To use the visual arts terms from our curriculum to analyze a work of art, in particular, selected American paintings at the Met.

CORE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students will:

  • Use the HKMS website to link to the Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
  • Choose a work from selection of American paintings at the Met.
  • Analyze the painting, observing the organization of the composition, the color, the space, and the mood conveyed by the artist.
  • Write a narrative about the work, using terms from the Visual Arts Curriculum for the fifth year.
Curriculum Goals: Technology Integration:
Fine Arts:
  • Elements of Art (2):  Students will understand the organizational principles of art.
  • History and Cultures (#4): Students will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
  • Analysis, Interpretation and Evaluation (#5): Students will reflect upon, describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate their own and others’ work.
  • Connections: Students will make connections between the visual arts, other disciplines and daily life.
     

Language Arts:

  • Interpret text (image) by using prior knowledge and experiences
  • Creating, interpreting and evaluating written, and visual texts/images
  • Engage in a process of generating ideas, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing or presenting
  • Proofread and edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization

1.      Use Internet to view pre-selected website on American artists

2.      Select painting and save in jpeg format

3.      Use Microsoft Word and open a blank document

4.      Insert jpeg of painting into blank document

5.      Enlarge the painting and print, selecting portrait or landscape orientation to fit the size of the painting

6.      Use Microsoft Word  to write a narrative

7.      Use Microsoft Word Tools (Spelling and Grammar) to review and revise narrative
