Description: The Five Themes of Geography are tools that geographers use in order to organize their study of the world. Each theme allows a geographer to paint a clearer picture of the world and its people. The five themes are location, place, human-environmental interactions, movement and regions.

1. Location: This theme allows a geographer to find a location of a place. One way to do so is to find the absolute location of a place on a map or globe. We use latitude and longitude lines in order to do so.

Another way to identify the location of a place is by describing its relative location, or where it is in relation to other places.

2. Place: This theme enables a geographer to describe those characteristics that make an area stand out from others. Looking at the physical characteristics of a place enable us to learn about landforms, vegetation and climate. While describing a place, geographers also look at human characteristics in order to show what the people of an area are like.

3. Human-Environmental Interactions: This theme helps us to understand how people use their environment, change it, adapt to it, as well as the consequences of these changes.

4. Movement: This theme helps to explain how people, goods, and ideas move from one place to another.

5. Region: A region is a group of places that share something in common. The world is divided into many regions.

Task: Each class team will be assigned one of the five themes of geography. Each team will focus on using that theme to create a thorough description of Easton. Using Inspiration, the Internet, our text, World Geography: Building a Global Perspective, and classroom resources, students will conduct research to gather as much information as possible for their theme. Each team will share their research, compile it and create a class web page to describe the town of Easton.
